The Freemen and Women of the City warmly welcome you to our official website. We hope that you find the information here very helpful and interest. You will find that going through the pages, that some of them require a password as these pages are for Freemen and Women only. We would also like to inform you that this website is in the process of being upgraded and we intend to try and do this with minimum disrubtion to services.
The Freemen and Women of the City is looked after and run by a Committee of 15 Freemen and 1 Freewoman, with four main roles of President, Vice President, Secretary and Honorary Treasurer. The rest of the Committee including our Website Administrator are there to help with a smooth running of our Association.
We have put together some questions and answers below which are frequently asked us. We hope that these help you and we would like to meet you when we join the Mayor, City Councillors and other Organisations on the Gloucester Festival Day in September.
Q. WHAT ARE FREEMEN?
A. In medieval times the term 'FREEMEN' was given to Male Citizens who have acquired certain Privileges and Right either by birth rights or being granted the FREEDOMSHIP by a Sovereign. This gave them the Freedom to live and work in a City. We here in Gloucester still grant the Freedom to the City to those who can prove that they have the birth rights.
Q. ARE FREEMEN AND FREEMASONS THE SAME THING?
A. NO - both the Freemen and Freemasons are completely separate Organisations. The only thing that our Organisations have in common in Gloucester are that we are friends.
Q. IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO BECOME A FREEMAN / WOMAN?
A. Yes, not many people know or understand that there are two ways to become a FREEMAN / WOMEN of the City of Gloucester and the first way was through the male side of the Family ( Father to Son ), but in 2010 it also became Father to Daughter and they are known as CHARTERED FREEWOMEN. The other way is as an HONORARY FREEMAN / WOMEN and this is handed to someone who has helped an Organisation for many years or like the old GLOUCESTER REGIMENT, but for the individual who has been granted it the HONOUR will sadly die with them.
Q. WHEN WERE WOMEN ALLOWED TO ACQUIRE THE FREEDOM OF THE CITY?
A. In 2010 Government ruling stated that all FREEMEN ASSOCIATIONS should allow Daughters of Freemen, ( past and present ) into the Association and since then we here in Gloucester have been very proud and honoured to welcome our Female members.
Q. I AM ENTITLED TO BECOME A FREEMAN / WOMEN, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOW?
A. If you know that you are entitled to Claim for the FREEDOM of the City of Gloucester, we have now set up another page ( below ) called 'ENROLMENTS' which will inform you of what to do next and what certificates are required. The form that we have WILL NOT appear on this page until our official take over for Enrolments from the City Council on January 1st 2015. You are able to get the paperwork ready to make it easier for you.
Q. MY GRANDFATHER WAS A FREEMAN, BUT MY FATHER DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE IT ON. DOES THAT MEAN I NOT ABLE TO TAKE IT ON?
A. Since 2010 if you can prove that your Grandfather held the FREEDOM of the City you can now take it on, wheather you are Male or Female. This is classed as missing one generation, please go to the 'ENROLMENT' page.
