The Freemen and Freewomen of the City is run by a Committee. The four main roles are:-  President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer. The rest of the Committee are there to help with the smooth running of the Guild.

Below we have answered some frequently asked questions.

Q. ARE FREEMEN AND FREEMASONS THE SAME THING?

A. NO - both the Freemen and Freemasons are completely separate Organisations.

Q. HOW DO I  BECOME A FREEMAN / FREEWOMAN?

A.Not many people know or understand that there are two ways to become a FREEMAN / FREEWOMAN of the City of Gloucester. The first way is Hereditary, from Father to Son, for example. In 2010 it also became possible for ladies to take up the freedom in this way and they are known as FREEWOMEN.

The second way is to become an HONORARY FREEMAN / WOMAN and this is gifted by the City Council to individuals, at their discretion. This honour cannot be passed on.

Q. WHEN WERE WOMEN ALLOWED TO ACQUIRE THE FREEDOM OF THE CITY?

A. In 2010 Government ruling stated that Freeman Guilds should allow Daughters of Freemen, ( past and present ) into the Guild (sadly not all guilds do this) and since then, we here in Gloucester, have been very proud and honoured to welcome our Female members.

Q. I AM ENTITLED TO BECOME A FREEMAN / FREEWOMAN, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOW?

A. Please go to our enrolement page, which will inform you of what to do next.

Q. MY GRANDFATHER WAS A FREEMAN, BUT MY FATHER DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE IT ON. DOES THAT MEAN I AM NOT ABLE TO TAKE IT ON?

A. If you can prove that your Grandfather held the FREEDOM of the City, you can now take it on, whether you are Male or Female.
